Beli vs Google Maps: Ranked Lists or Saved Pins?
Google Maps is the better place to save restaurants you want to try and to navigate there; Beli is the better place to record and rank the ones you have actually eaten at, and to see your friends favourites. Google Maps lists remember that you were curious. Beli remembers whether it was any good.
Fittingly, Beli itself began as a Google Map. Its married co-founders, CEO Judy Thelen and CTO Eliot Frost, kept a Google Map of everywhere they ate together: "ranked, color coded, notes, favorite dishes, all that," Frost told Founder Brew. They turned it into an app while at Harvard Business School, as The Harvard Crimson recounts. If your own map has started to look like theirs, this page is for you. Already sure you want out? Our Google Maps export guide gets your pins into a file in a few steps.

Why do people keep restaurants in Google Maps?
People keep restaurants in Google Maps because it is already on their phone: saving a place to Favorites, Want to go or a custom list takes one tap, and every saved place shows as a pin on the map they navigate with.
According to Google Maps Help, the default lists are Favorites, Want to go, Starred places, Labeled and Travel plans, and you can create your own as private or shared. A shared list can have collaborators who add places and notes. "What is near me that I wanted to try?" is one glance away.
For a short list, that is honestly enough. The trouble starts when the list grows. A saved pin has no score of your own, so a place you loved and a place you saved after one TikTok look identical. "Want to go" quietly fills with places you already went to, because nothing moves them. Our Google Maps lists alternative guide covers six ways out of that, Beli among them.
How is Beli different from Google Maps lists?
Beli differs from Google Maps lists by recording what you thought after eating: you mark a restaurant as liked, fine or didn't like, compare it with places on your list, and Beli turns that into a score out of 10. The full mechanic, and the apps that copy it, is in our restaurant ranking apps guide.
On top of that sits a social layer Google Maps does not have: you follow friends, see how they ranked places, and get recommendation scores for restaurants you have not tried. Leaderboards and streaks reward regular logging. As of October 2026, Beli is a mobile app for iOS and Android.
Can you rate restaurants in Google Maps lists?
No: a place saved to a Google Maps list has a note field but no personal rating, and Google's 1–5 star ratings are public reviews stored separately on the place's page. That is a review for strangers, under your Google profile, not a note to yourself.
Why do so many Google Maps restaurants show 4-point-something?
Because Google ratings bunch up near the top. A study of 21,841 US restaurants in seven metro areas, "3 Stars on Yelp, 4 Stars on Google Maps" (Li and Hecht, ACM CSCW 2020), found an average Google Maps rating of 4.2 stars with a standard deviation of just 0.4, against 3.5 on Yelp. When most places sit between 3.8 and 4.6, the stars stop telling you much. Beli's founders made the same complaint: they told the Crimson that five-star reviews were often inflated and hard to tell apart.
A personal ranking sidesteps that, because every place is placed against the others you have tried. The catch is that it ranks restaurants, not dishes. If you want to remember which plate was the good one, an absolute per-dish score answers that directly.
Which is better for sharing restaurants with friends?
Google Maps is better for planning together; Beli is better for knowing what friends thought. Google Maps shares lists: you send a link, and collaborators can add places. That works well for a trip, and it is the easiest option when friends do not want another app. What it does not show is whether your friend loved a place or merely saved it.
Beli shares opinions. Following a friend shows you their rankings. The more friends use it, the better its recommendations, which also means it is less useful if nobody you know is on it. If you want a list a group edits together, see our shareable restaurant list guide.
Should you use Beli and Google Maps together?
Yes, for most people: Beli to decide and remember, Google Maps to find hours and get there. Beli is not a navigation app, and Google Maps has no personal score. The pairing matters most in smaller cities and towns, where few people you follow may have ranked anything and Beli's suggestions have little to work with; there, Google's coverage of every listed restaurant fills the gap, inflated stars and all.
Can you export your restaurants from Google Maps?
Yes, through Google Takeout (Google's download-your-data help). As of October 2026, selecting Saved exports each list as its own CSV with the place name, your note and a Google Maps link. The file has no coordinates column, which is what trips up most imports. Our step-by-step guide on exporting Google Maps saved places walks through it and the coordinate problem.
Before switching any app, export first. Even if you keep using Google Maps, a CSV of your lists is a backup you control.
How do you move Google Maps saved places into another app?
You export your saved places from Google Takeout, then upload the file to an app that reads that format. Crumble imports Google Takeout saved places directly as wishlist entries; upload the GeoJSON export, which keeps coordinates, because CSV rows without coordinates are skipped and counted in the preview rather than guessed onto the wrong city. The free wishlist holds 50 places. Google reviews are not imported, so re-add the ones you care about by hand (you can set the visit date). Nothing is written until you confirm.
After that, a place moves from the wishlist to a review on its own the moment you log a visit, so "want to go" stays honest. Each dish gets its own 0–5 score, and your friends rated spots show up on your map, filtered to places you have not tried.

When should you just stay with Google Maps?
- Your list is a few dozen places and you mostly use it to navigate.
- You save more than food: shops, viewpoints, hotels.
- You plan trips with a group who will not install anything new.
- You want one app for directions, opening hours and saved places.
When is Beli the better choice?
- Your friends are on Beli and you want their rankings.
- You enjoy ranking, and a personal top list is the goal.
- Leaderboards and streaks would get you logging more.
- You want recommendations based on your own and your friends taste rather than a crowd average.
Beli is a polished, popular app, and if this list describes you, it is a natural step up from saved pins. If you want something quieter, with dish-level scores and leaderboards only among friends, our Beli alternatives roundup compares the options. Coming from Yelp rather than Google Maps? Frequently asked questions
Is Beli better than Google Maps for restaurants?
For recording and ranking restaurants you have eaten at, and seeing friends opinions, yes. For saving places you want to try, navigating, and checking hours, Google Maps is better. Many people use Google Maps to find and get to a place and a tracker like Beli or Crumble to remember what they thought.
Did Beli start on Google Maps?
Yes. Co-founders Judy Thelen and Eliot Frost tracked everywhere they ate together on a ranked, colour-coded Google Map with notes and favourite dishes, then built Beli while at Harvard Business School. The app launched in 2021.
Can I rate restaurants in my Google Maps lists?
Not on the list itself. A saved place has a note field but no personal score. You can leave a public 1–5 star review on the place, but that is visible to everyone and stored separately from your lists.
How do I export my Google Maps saved places?
Use Google Takeout, deselect everything, tick Saved, and export. Each list arrives as a CSV with the place name, note and a Google Maps link, but no coordinates column. Our export guide covers the full steps.
Can I import Google Maps lists into Beli?
Beli does not document an import on its website or store listings. User reviews on the App Store and Google Play mention importing saved Google Maps pins into Beli, and one January 2025 Google Play review says they came in only as want-to-try places, with no way the reviewer could find to import them as visited. Treat it as a way to seed your want-to-try list, not your rankings.
Can I import Google Maps saved places into Crumble?
Yes, your saved places. Upload the Takeout GeoJSON export, which keeps coordinates, and Crumble turns them into wishlist entries (the free wishlist holds 50 places). CSV rows without coordinates are skipped and counted in the preview, so nothing lands in the wrong city. Google reviews are not imported; re-add the ones you want by hand, with the date you visited.
Give your saved pins a score
Crumble costs nothing and opens in your phone or laptop browser. Bring your Google Maps lists across, then rate what you actually ate.
