The Best Sandwiches in Dordrecht

Updated September 5, 2026 · by the Crumble team

A Dordrecht sandwich shop rated dish by dish in a food tracking app
Every sandwich on this page is a logged visit with a rating on the dish.

The best sandwiches in Dordrecht are not sold by restaurants, which is why you will not find them on a restaurant list. A sandwich counter never makes one: no tasting menu, no wine pairing, nothing to review. So the guides skip the category entirely and you end up at a chain on the Bagijnhof.

So this is the other list: the best sandwiches in Dordrecht as far as we can tell, which means seven places we have eaten at ourselves, in the order we would send a friend to them, and ranked by the sandwich rather than by the shop. That distinction matters more than it sounds: the best sandwich in this town is sold by a place that does not look like the best restaurant in this town, and the two questions have different answers.

How this list was made. Every place below was eaten at and logged in our own app, with a rating on the individual sandwich rather than on the venue. That is why the order here is not the order you would get from a review site: we rank the thing you put in your mouth. Only sandwiches we rated 4.0 or higher are listed. Where a place served us something that did not land, it is left off rather than written up, because this is a page about what to order. For the full city list, including dinner, see our best places to eat in Dordrecht guide.

1. Foodnerd: the pastrami sandwich is the best lunch in Dordrecht

Voorstraat 334. Foodnerd is a small delicatessen and sandwich counter in the historic centre, and the pastrami sandwich is the single item we have rated highest in this city. We have logged it across multiple visits and it has scored 5.0 more than once, which almost nothing else in our records has managed.

What makes it is not only the meat. The pastrami is tender to the point of falling apart, but the mustard-ish sauce and the sourdough are doing as much work as the beef is, and the toppings are chosen rather than piled. Our note after one visit was simply that the structure of the bread fits the total package, which is the boring engineering answer to why one sandwich beats another.

The porchetta sandwich is the other one worth ordering, at 4.5. Good meat, good flavour, and the one thing we would change is more sauce, a pistachio cream or similar. If you are going with someone, order one of each and split them.

Practical: this is lunch, not dinner, and it is small. It is also the cheapest genuinely excellent thing you can eat in Dordrecht, which is why it opens our city guide as well as this one.

2. Hazel: the pumpkin chutney is the whole sandwich

Voorstraat 130. The sandwich with pumpkin chutney rated 5.0, which puts it level with Foodnerd at the top of this page and makes it one of only two sandwiches in the city we have scored that high.

The chutney is the reason. It is sweet and properly spiced and it carries the whole sandwich, which is not what a chutney usually gets to do: normally it is there to cut through something else. Here it is the main event and everything is built around it.

Worth noting where this leaves you geographically. Foodnerd is further up the same street at 334, Happy Li is at 282, and Bakkerij Samen is at 292B, so four of the seven places on this page are on the Voorstraat. If you have one lunchtime in Dordrecht, that is the street to spend it on.

3. Ruby’s: order the bara first, and order two

Lindenstraat 6-7. Ruby’s is Surinamese, and while the roti is what most people come for, the thing to order at the counter is the bara: a flat fried bread that costs almost nothing. We rated both the beef and the chicken curry versions at 4.5. They are small, so one is a snack and two is lunch.

It is worth saying plainly that this is the best value on the page. A bara is the cheapest item in this guide and it outscored several things that cost five times as much. Ruby’s is also halal, which is not always easy to establish from a menu board.

If you have room for a full plate rather than a sandwich, the roti kipfilet speciaal is the other reason to come, and it is covered in the main Dordrecht guide.

4. Villa Augustus: the broodje mortadella, and the garden

Oranjelaan 7. Villa Augustus is a hotel and restaurant in a converted water tower with a large kitchen garden, and most people arrive for dinner or for the market. The broodje mortadella is the lunch order: fresh, creamy, and rated 4.5.

It is the only sandwich on this list where the setting is a genuine part of the recommendation. You are not eating it standing up on the Voorstraat, you are eating it in a garden, which changes what the same sandwich is worth on a Saturday in June. Factor that in when you compare it to Foodnerd, which wins on the food alone.

5. La Focaccina: the Tartufo special

Dordrecht centre, 3311 EJ. La Focaccina does Italian sandwiches, and the Tartufo special is the one we rated 4.0: ham with an intensely creamy cheese, which our note described as looking like a broodje gezond with an unhinged twist. That is meant as praise.

6. Happy Li: broodje cha sjeuw

Voorstraat 282. Happy Li is the Surinamese-Chinese counter, and the order is the broodje cha sjeuw, the sweet roast pork sandwich, rated 4.0. It is the well-known sweeter style rather than a reinvention, and it is done properly.

One practical note from our own visit: add your own sambal. The sambal served with it was very mild, and the sandwich is better spicy.

7. Broodjeszaak Cairo: falafel done generously

Tolbrug 5. Cairo is where to go if you want the falafel, either in a wrap or on bread, rated 4.0. The toppings are the reason: this is a generous sandwich rather than three balls and a smear of sauce, and the staff are notably friendly, which is worth something on a Tuesday.

It is also the obvious vegetarian pick on this page. Nothing else here is built around it.

And for the sweet half of lunch

Bakkerij Samen, Voorstraat 292B. Not a sandwich, so it is not ranked above, but it is a hundred metres from two places on this list and it earns the detour. The almond croissant and the cardamom bun both rated 4.5. What we wrote about the almond croissant was that it is not too sweet, which sounds like faint praise and is not: most almond croissants are ruined by sugar, and this one is not.

How we ranked seven sandwiches against each other

We rate every place we eat at in our own app, dish by dish, so this order comes out of a record and not a memory. Three rules follow from that, and they explain why this list looks different from the ones you get from a search engine.

  1. We have to have eaten it. Nothing is on this page on reputation, and there are well-known sandwich addresses in Dordrecht that are not here for exactly that reason. The page grows as we eat.
  2. We rank the sandwich, not the shop. A venue average blends the thing you should order with the thing you should not, and the average is what a review site shows you. Ranking the dish is why a bara at a Surinamese counter sits above sandwiches from smarter kitchens.
  3. Only what we rated 4.0 or higher gets written up. Where a place served us something weaker on the same visit, it is left out. We are telling you what to order, not running a scoreboard on anybody.

We rate to one tenth of a star, so a 4.5 and a 4.7 are genuinely different sandwiches, and a 5.0 that survives repeat visits is the strongest signal we have. Foodnerd and Hazel are the two 5.0s on this page, and Foodnerd is the one that has held it across repeat visits.

Keep your own list of sandwiches

The reason a list like this is useful is not that our taste is definitive. It is that it was written down at the time, per dish, instead of being reconstructed later from the vague memory that somewhere on the Voorstraat was good. That is a thing you can do for yourself, and it takes about twenty seconds per lunch.

Crumble is the app we built for it: you log the place, the dish and a rating, and it becomes a map of what you have actually eaten rather than a folder of photos. If you keep a running list of places you have not been to yet, a restaurant wishlist handles that half, and our guide to keeping track of restaurants covers the method whichever tool you use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sandwich in Dordrecht?

The pastrami sandwich at Foodnerd, Voorstraat 334. It is the single highest-rated item in our Dordrecht records, at 5.0 across repeat visits. The pastrami is very tender, but the mustard-style sauce and the sourdough are doing as much work as the meat. The porchetta sandwich there is the second order at 4.5.

Where can you eat cheaply in Dordrecht?

Ruby’s at Lindenstraat 6-7 for a bara, a flat Surinamese fried bread that costs almost nothing and which we rated 4.5 in both the beef and the chicken curry version. Two of them make a lunch. Foodnerd is the other answer: a sandwich counter rather than a restaurant, so a very good lunch costs sandwich money.

Is there good vegetarian lunch in Dordrecht?

Broodjeszaak Cairo at Tolbrug 5 is the pick, for falafel either in a wrap or on bread, rated 4.0, with generous toppings rather than a token portion. La Focaccina’s Italian sandwiches and Bakkerij Samen’s pastry both work as meat-free options as well, though neither is a vegetarian kitchen.

Where do you get a broodje cha sjeuw in Dordrecht?

Happy Li at Voorstraat 282, rated 4.0. It is the sweeter, well-known style of Surinamese-Chinese roast pork sandwich, made properly. Add your own sambal: the one served with it was very mild when we went, and the sandwich is better spicy.

How is this different from a Tripadvisor or Yelp list of Dordrecht sandwich shops?

Two ways. We have eaten everything on this page ourselves and logged it at the time, so nothing is here on reputation, and we rank the individual sandwich rather than the venue. An aggregator shows you a venue average that blends every dish and every visitor, which is why the shop with the best single sandwich in a city often is not the shop at the top of those lists.
