Untappd for Whiskey: Which Apps Do the Check-In for Whisky?

Updated October 2, 2026 · by the Crumble team

There is no single Untappd for whiskey. The closest match is Drammer, which has a friends timeline, 50+ badges and a collection. Distiller is best for ratings and flavor tags, Whiskybase for the bottle database, and Crumble for a private journal tied to the bars you drink in. Untappd itself now accepts spirits too, so for some people the honest answer is to keep using it.

The question comes up because Untappd is several features in one. Hand a beer drinker's phone to a whisky drinker and they want some of it: the quick check-in, the score out of five, the badges, the venue tag, and seeing what friends had last night. No whisky app copies all five, and each one keeps a different part. This page goes through those parts one at a time. If you want a broad look at whisky apps instead, our roundup of the best whisky tracking apps covers the whole category, collectors included.

Where we stand: we make Crumble, one of the five apps below, so read our section with that in mind. Every claim about the other four comes from their own app store listings, help pages or blog posts, linked inline and checked in October 2026. Two of them do things Crumble doesn't, and we say which.

Does Untappd work for whiskey?

Yes, as of October 2026. In its 4.6.1 update of November 13, 2025, Untappd went from about 450 to more than 900 drink styles. It added a Spirits drink type, which it describes as "whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, and liqueurs". You check in a bottled bourbon the same way you check in a stout. The same post says that all badges except Wheel of Styles and New Brew Thursday now unlock with the new styles, so whiskey check-ins count toward most badges. Anyone who wants Untappd to stay beer-only can hide spirits under Settings → Account → Preferences → Drink Types.

What it doesn't add is anything specific to whisky. Untappd's structure is still brewery, style and venue. There is no shelf of bottles you own, no record of opening a bottle and pouring from it for months, and no place for cask, age statement or bottler. The App Store listing sells it as an app for all drinks (cocktails, spirits, beer) with venue menus, friends and an in-app shop. If you drink a dram now and then between beers, that's enough. If whisky is your main drink, it starts to feel thin.

Which whiskey app is most like Untappd?

Here is the Untappd loop split into its parts, with the app that does each part best:

In short, Drammer comes closest to the full Untappd experience, with badges, a timeline and a cellar. Distiller wins on ratings and has the best "what will this taste like?" answer. Whiskybase wins on bottle data. Crumble works best if whisky is part of a wider food-and-drink record you share only with friends.

Drammer: the closest thing to Untappd for whisky

Drammer is a Dutch whisky app that has the most Untappd-like features of the four. Its App Store listing describes a community timeline where you "see your friends whisky experiences", more than 50 badges to earn, a barcode scanner to add bottles, a collection and wishlist you can share, top-100 lists, a festival calendar, and export to CSV or Excel. It says it has more than 50,000 whisky fans and runs in Dutch, English and German. It's free on Android and iOS, and Drammer Premium is sold as an in-app purchase.

What it skips from Untappd: venues. Its listing doesn't mention bars or venue check-ins. Drammer is built around bottles and people, not the bar you're sitting in, so "where did I have that?" isn't part of a check-in the way it is on Untappd.

Distiller: ratings and flavor profiles

Distiller covers whisky and other spirits. Its App Store listing claims nearly 60,000 spirits and millions of reviews, and lets you follow other spirits fans. Its most useful idea for a check-in is flavor tags. When you review a bottle you tap tags like "peaty", and Distiller combines everyone's tags into a profile showing the spirit's three strongest flavors. A panel of experts, called the Tasting Table, also scores bottles on a 100-point scale.

What it skips from Untappd: the habit of logging what you're drinking right now. Distiller is mostly for deciding what to buy. Per its FAQ, Pro ($4.99 a month or $48 a year) adds private notes and bottle quantities on lists, flavor search, price data, export and no ads. Full comparison: Distiller alternatives.

Whiskybase: the database behind the check-in

Whiskybase calls itself the world's largest whisky database: hundreds of thousands of bottles, millions of ratings, a label and barcode scanner, and shop prices from more than 50 countries. You can follow friends and write notes on nose, taste and finish. When you rate a bottle, the full bottle record comes with it. The listing promises everything "from rare single cask releases to in-demand favorites". It's also on Android and the web.

What it skips from Untappd: the social side. Whiskybase is mainly a reference and collection tool. Your ratings go into a public catalog, and private per-bottle notes need the paid Whiskybase Plus. More in Whiskybase alternatives.

Also worth a look: Distilld, a free whisky app for iOS and Android, combines ratings, notes, flavor profiles, a collection and following other fans. Its own page quotes a user who compares it to Untappd and Vivino.

Crumble: whisky check-ins with friends, next to your food

Crumble is a social food map with drink journals added on. The whisky journal is free: you switch it on in the add-ons screen. It's built around bottles and drams rather than a public feed.

  • A shelf of bottles. Each bottle stores a photo, name, distillery, country, region, a variant line (age, cask strength) and ABV. It also gets a rating on the 0–5 scale in tenth-of-a-star steps (★ 4.2) and free-text tasting notes. The journal gives you a "nose / palate / finish" prompt.
  • Drams logged under the bottle. Open a bottle and log a dram: a rating, a note and the date. The drams build up under that bottle, so the pour from a freshly opened bottle and the one from the last third sit next to each other.
  • A check-in at the bar. This is the most Untappd-like part. Review a whisky bar on the map, list the whisky you ordered, and it shows up in your whisky journal as a pending bottle with the bar attached. You confirm it or reject it.
  • A "Distilled in" map. The countries on your bottles fill a small origin map that opens into a globe, so the spread of Scotland, Japan, the US and the rest is easy to see. You can also log distillery visits as places on the main map. Our guides to distilleries in Scotland and Japan are good places to start.
  • Friends first. New bottles and drams show up in your friends activity, and friends can open your shelf read-only (followers can too if you make your profile public). Reviews are visible only to accepted friends by default. Crumble is EU-hosted and doesn't sell data.

What it skips from Untappd: scale and badges. Crumble has no public whisky database. You type in a bottle the first time you pour from it. The label scan that would fill in those fields belongs to a planned Plus tier that isn't available yet. Crumble does have XP, levels and weekly challenges, but no whisky badges like Untappd's style badges, and there's no public top-100. If you want to see what strangers are drinking, Drammer or Distiller is the better pick.

Whisky or whiskey: does the spelling matter?

Not to any of these apps. As Distiller's FAQ puts it, whiskey gets an "e" when it comes from the USA or Ireland, and most other countries, including Scotland, Japan and Canada, spell it whisky. Bourbon and rye are American, so they are whiskeys. All five apps on this page log both, so a bourbon and an Islay single malt go on the same shelf. This page uses "whiskey" in the title because that is how most people search for an "Untappd for whiskey". After that, it uses each spelling where it fits.

When is Untappd still the better pick?

Stay on Untappd if your friends are all there and whisky is an occasional drink. A spirits check-in now counts toward most badges, your whole drinking history stays in one feed, and venues with Untappd menus are already set up. Switch when you start owning bottles. Untappd has no record of a bottle you open in March and finish in October, and that's the main reason serious whisky drinkers use something else.

If you're keeping Untappd for beer and want to move one thing at a time, our guide to exporting your Untappd check-ins explains what the export contains.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want the Untappd feeling for whisky (badges, a timeline, a cellar): Drammer.
  • You want to know what a bottle will taste like before you buy it: Distiller.
  • You collect and need exact bottle data: Whiskybase.
  • You want drams, bars, distilleries and dinners in one private record shared with friends: Crumble.
  • Whisky is a side drink next to beer: stay on Untappd and turn on the Spirits drink type.

The same "Untappd for X" question has different answers for other drinks. See Untappd for wine and Untappd for coffee. If you're after a method rather than an app, how to track whisky explains which details to write down for each bottle and each dram.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Untappd for whiskey?

Not one app that copies all of it. Drammer is the closest, with a friends timeline, 50+ badges, a collection and barcode scanning. Distiller is best for ratings and flavor profiles, and Whiskybase for bottle data. Crumble is a free journal that you share only with friends. Untappd itself has also accepted spirits since November 2025.

Can you check in whiskey on Untappd?

Yes. Untappd's 4.6.1 update in November 2025 added a Spirits drink type that covers whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, tequila and liqueurs, and spirits check-ins count toward most badges. Untappd still has no bottle shelf or whisky-specific fields such as cask or age statement.

Is there an Untappd for bourbon?

Bourbon is American whiskey, so the same apps apply. Distiller was built by Americans, spells it whiskey and reviews plenty of bourbon and rye. Drammer has a bourbon top 100. Untappd and Crumble log bourbon the same way they log any other whisky.

What is the Vivino for whiskey?

If you mean scanning a label to get a crowd rating, Whiskybase has a label and barcode scanner tied to millions of ratings, and Drammer scans barcodes. Distiller gives you expert scores and flavor profiles. Crumble's label scan belongs to a planned Plus tier that isn't available yet.

Is there a free whiskey check-in app?

Yes. Untappd, Drammer, Distiller and Whiskybase all have free versions with paid upgrades. Crumble's whisky journal is free, including the bottle shelf, logged drams, the origin map and sharing with friends.

Can I move my Untappd whiskey check-ins to another app?

Only partly. Crumble reads Untappd exports, but it puts every imported row into the Beer journal, including any spirits check-ins, not into the Whisky journal. The cleanest option is to re-log the bottles you still care about and keep the export as an archive.
